Shaun Rose is passionate about environmental and social causes. She recently celebrated her 24th birthday, and Drake’s verse in the song, From Time, could’ve been written for her:
You a flower child, beautiful child, I’m in your zone.
Looking like you came from the 70’s on your own.
One of her newest songs details her love and respect for nature, but her musical range is pretty wide.
In a recent remix of her song Shotgun; a dreamy, jazzy, arrangement gives Shaun a chance to stretch out and show off her vocals.
She’s versatile, though— Lose (Produced by Taylor King and mixed by Jirou Street) starts out as a romantic ballad with a haunting, reverby, slightly dissonant sounding piano riff and cutting lyrics. But at one point she switches gears; going harder and spitting out:
You can get lost with all that shit.
Hope you know you just had your last kiss.
Thought I was lost without you;
I’m a boss without you;
Wrote a song about you— that’s it.
Remember the film, Coming to America? To a lot of people, Queens is the New York City borough where Eddie Murphy went to find his queen. But Queens is also Shaun’s home and she gives a nod to New York in two of her songs.
The live-action portion of the music video Sore Loser, which is really funny (Props to director Kodi Van Art), was shot in Queensbridge Park; and in the song, Times Square, you hear a hellified piano and synth ostinato that almost sounds like she had Alicia Keys or John Legend in the studio with her.
And, of course, we gotta mention Luv Me. Produced by Mr. Frander and mixed by Michael Ashby, this song starts out as a tribute to legend Jill Scott, but Rose quickly makes it her own:
I ain’t out here on my own, yeah you taught me that;
When I hit the scene, make sure my heels high;
With every wink, know what you think;
My lashes call you right back.
And then, theres Deja Vu.
And Daylight.
And Buttaflies.
And Air (Love Elvis Molina’s acoustic guitar).
And Siren.
And… And… And…
If you were lucky enough to see Shaun perform recently at Basquiat’s in Brooklyn, N.Y., or at the World Natural Hair Show in Atlanta, you know that the stage is her friend. Shaun’s live performance’s are a dialogue— a conversation between her and the audience.
